My Top 9 Tips for Monetizing Your Blog.

Nine Easy Ways To Making Money Blogging.

This post contains affiliate links.  If you purchase or subscribe using these links, I may be compensated a small percent, at no extra cost to you.  Please see my page Affiliate Disclaimer if you are interested in learning more.

Are you a new blogger that has recently become interested in learning how you can make an income from blogging?  Or are have you been blogging for a while now, but have never made any money from it?  Maybe you blog and make a little money, but would really like to start making more from all the hours you put in?  If you fall into any of these categories, this post is for you!

If you are new to the subject of making money while blogging, the vast amount of information out there on the subject probably has you feeling overwhelmed.  And I'm with you, because many times I feel completely overwhelmed from all the information I read on the topic.  I have been blogging for over five years now and I am the author of two blogs.  The blog I started in 2011 was a Latin cooking blog called Postres de La Cipota and I did absolutely nothing to monetize it, though it did end up get featured on NBC Latino in 2012.  Then in 2016, I got the urge to start a new women's life blog, which became The Makeup Equation, and it is then that I decided to get serious about blogging and look for ways to monetize my blogs.

I think that it is very important not to get mentally overwhelmed.  I would suggest reading a bunch, and then just walk away from it for a few hours, or a day or two to give your mind a mental break.  The most important things you read will stand out to you and stick in your head, and I would just start with trying to implement what you find to be most important first.

Having said all this, here are nine extremely helpful tips I would give anyone if they asked me how they could start making money while blogging.  I have tried to keep things short and simple, and I am only sharing the things that have helped me the very most during my ongoing blogging journey.

1.  Buy a domain name ASAP.  If you do not buy a ".com" address, it will be way harder for people to find your blog and click on your ads.  As soon as you have thought of a good domain name and some post ideas, please buy a domain and get hosting.  BlueHost.com (afflink) is a really great company to get hosting from.  They are very affordable and have a pretty solid reputation.  You can check to see if your desired domain name is available in the box below:

Once you have a website, it's important to get people to subscribe via email to your site, this way they can keep up with your posts and updates. A fantastic site that creates super cute subscriber box widgets for free is GetSiteControl. I love GoSiteControl because their widgets are extremely simple to install and they never try to charge you a penny.  Some other cute widgets this site offers for free includes contact boxes, follower widgets, and sharing widgets.

2.  Write like crazy.  If you are new to blogging, chances are your brain is bursting with ideas for new posts, I know that I was when I decided to start my second blog.  Try to make sure that your blog has at least 20-40 posts before you start trying to monetize it.  This will ensure that all new readers that find your blog will have lots to read and be interested in.  It will also help you see what your niche is and which people and groups you should follow on Pinterest. Lastly, only write about things you enjoy.  Your blog will not be successful if you are writing about things you are not interested in or know nothing about.  Write about things you know and are passionate about and your posts will rock every time.

3.  Keywords really ARE key!  I cannot stress this one enough.  You will have a much better chance of your website being put high in search engine results if your posts and post titles are keyword rich.  The best thing you can do is to have keywords in your post URL address, and the way to do that is to title your post with keywords.  Now I am not saying to go crazy, because keyword stuffing can also hurt your search rank.  Just make sure to use key words that pertain to what you are talking about, and you should be good.

4.  Create an Adsense account.  This is probably the easiest way to make some quick cash from your blogs.  Each person is only allowed one Adsense account, but you can have multiple domain names under each account, thus being able to include more than one blog if you have it.  You will get paid once you reach over $100.  You are paid per views and the income is completely passive.  Please make sure to list the required disclosure on your website if you join Adsense. If you read my Privacy Policy page a the top of my site, you will see the required disclosures needed for the Adsense program. You can also find them by googling required content for Adsense.

5.  Become an Affiliate.

One of the most popular affiliate programs out there for bloggers is Amazon.  Sign up to become an Amazon affiliate so that you will be able to put links for things you like directly into your posts.  If someone buys it, you get a percentage, it's that simple.  It's best to put links to things that you have bought, used, and love, because then your post about these items will be much more credible.  Please also note that you cannot put Amazon affiliate links in newsletters or emails, so I suggest modifying your email feed to "short" in your settings (which is under the layout tab in blogger).  This way any Amazon affiliate links will not show in your shortened email blurbs if you put the links further down in the post.

Other really great affiliate programs include:

Awin Affiliate ProgramThis is a very popular affiliate program that offers you the opportunity to be an affiliate of loads of name brands such as GlossyBox, Etsy (for Etsy sellers), and PrettyLittleThing.  Awin also gives publishers, (that's you!), a $30 payout for every new affiliate referral you bring in!  There is a one time fee of $5 to join Awin, but they give this right back to you in your first payout.  Their minimum threshold for payment is one of the lowest I have seen - just $20 - and they even offer payouts twice a month.

Other merchants I work with:

ShopStyleCollective  - A great program with tons of fashion merchants that will pay you per click.  You get paid when your account is over $100.

MailerLite  - This is my email newsletter provider.  They are FREE for the first 1000 subscribers you have with unlimited emails, and very user friendly and easy to use.  They have 24/7 chat help too!  They offer landing pages, pop-ups, web forms, and automation, all for free. I truly cannot say enough good things about this provider.

6.  Pinterest will be your best friend.  This one is super important!  Pinterest is actually a search engine, not a social media platform, and the best way to increase your page views dramatically is to use Pinterest, and use it a lot.  This is one thing I completely neglected until I started my second blog years later, and I am still kicking myself for doing so.  Create a Pinterest account for each domain name you own and start following and pinning as many people as you can that are related to your niche.  Another huge way to increase page views via Pinterest is to join group boards.  I was extremely confused about how to join group boards on Pinterest and the biggest thing that helped me learn how to do it was watching some Youtube videos on it.  The videos showed me how to know who the original Pinterest board belonged to, and how to message them, etc. Also try to use as many vertical images as possible on your blogs, as vertical images are more Pinterest friendly.

7.  Live by Pixabay & Canva.  Unless you are a professional photographer, chances are you will need some stock photos every once and a while.  To avoid ever infringing on someone elses photo rights, just use Pixabay.  All the photos in Pixabay are completely free to the public for use.  It's the best free photo site in my opinion, and I've tried a lot of them over the years.   Canva.com is another completely free site that allows you to create wonderful poster and blogger graphics, as well as integrate your own pictures into poster formats.

8.  Focus on you.  I cannot tell you how many hours I have wasted on Instagram, Pinterest, and just reading blog after blog.  I love all of these things, but try to be mindful about the hours you are spending on them.  Those hours could be used adding value to your own blog and helping you make some money off it.  Also, reading and viewing too much content from others can leave you completely overwhelmed and confused about what direction you should take your blog, or what you should post about.   Try to focus on yourself and cut out all that background "noise" in your head.  If you try to focus on what you are interested in and enjoy, even if it may not be popular or trending at the moment, it will pay off, I promise.

9.  Expect a slow start and many, many, many hours.  This is my last but probably my best tip.  Guys and gals, can I be real with you for a moment??  Blogging for profit is not for the faint of heart.  I will tell you now that it is going to take many, many, let me say that again, many hours from you!! You will loose sleep over this, I promise.  If you have little ones at home, or if you work outside the home, this is going to mean that the only time you will likely get to do this is when you should be sleeping. See this picture of an empty bed?  Yes dear friend, that's going to be yours, because you will be sitting at your computer, not sleeping nicely in your bed.  As I write this post, I should be sleeping...just trying to give an example here.

My Top 9 Tips for Monetizing Your Blog.

Also, if you just had a baby, or have some other major life events going on right now, keep in mind you may simply not be able to log the hours you need, and this is going to hamper your profit.  You can still continue to blog  when you have the time, just plan on getting serious about monetizing it later on.

It's also going to take some time before you start getting any money at all from all those hours you put in.  If you are not dedicated to your blog, or you do not enjoy what you are writing about, you won't enjoy it and the monetary payoff will probably not come quick enough before you start to loose heart.  There is real money to be made blogging, but those that are making this money have spent thousands of hours getting there.  This is another reason why its key to enjoy what you are writing about, because if you don't, the hours will just feel brutal, not exciting.

If you enjoyed this post, you may also enjoy some of my other blogging and tech articles.  You can find all my blogging, business and technology posts under my page, Blogging and Tech, which is at the top of my site.

I truly hope that this post has been a source of encouragement and help to all who are reading it.  I would not be where I am today without the wealth of knowledge I have gained from great posts on the subject of making money while blogging.  I hope this post can give back just a little of all that I myself have gained.

And if you liked this post, would you do me a favor?  Would you please share it?  Thank you so much!
