The holidays are synonymous with a season of overeating and indulgence.  Just take a quick look around on Pinterest and you will see tons sugary and fatty Christmas treat recipes.  It sort of just makes sense that after two months of overeating, and eating the wrong types of foods, our bodies are ready to for a change.

Today I want to talk about 4 fast ways to lose weight for the New Year.  The added bonus is that not only will doing these things result in rapid weight loss, but these things are also pretty easy and even enjoyable to do.  Doing even just one of the four things I list here will result in you loosing weight. Try a few and you may find yourself ahead of the weight loss game altogether. 
Loosing weight is always a popular New Year's resolution.  And I don't know about you, but I always get excited when I lose a few pounds.  The holidays are a busy time, and we often find ourselves grabbing the quickest thing to eat, even though the quickest food is often not the healthiest.  We are constantly surrounded by candy and sweets that just seem to "go" with Thanksgiving and Christmas territory.  As a result, almost everyone is guaranteed to gain a few pounds during the two-month holiday stretch.

Below I have listed 4 easy ways to get your body to shed some pounds.  None of these things are extreme or very hard to do.  Also, none of these things involve not eating, which is a big no-no!  Starving yourself can result in overnight weight loss, but your body will get so hungry that you will likely binge on junk food later on. This pattern of starvation and binging will result in a dangerous cycle of yo-yo dieting that will slow your metabolism and make it harder for you to lose weight.

When it comes to steady weight loss that will stick, the key take away is that you want to do everything in balance and moderation.  Only do things that you can see yourself doing in the long run. If you can't stick with something, it's probably not even worth starting.

Below are my top 4 fast and easy ways to shed the pounds:

1. Become a vegetarian of any sort.

The key word here is ANY!  Pick what you want here.  Everyone feels good on different foods and what makes some bodies feel good, can make other bodies feel terrible.  For example, my body feels the best when I eat lots of carbohydrates like pasta and breads.  Whether you cut out dairy, meat, eggs, whatever you desire to remove from your diet, removing any aspect will result in weight loss.  Try removing a food group and if it works, stick with it.  If you find that you feel better when eating the food group, add it back in and try removing a different one.

If you are interested in learning more about vegetarian or vegan life, a good online source is Dr. John McDougall.  I always enjoy his "Hot topics" section.  Dr. McDougall has a popular book called, The Healthiest Diet on the Planet.

2.  Perform 15 minutes of enjoyable cardio exercise, 3-4 times a week.

If you perform cardio exercise of any sort, at least 3-4 times a week,  you will lose weight!! What type of cardio?? Anything you enjoy!! I am a firm believer that the only way someone can stick to exercising is if they do something they enjoy.  If you hate running, please, do not do it, because you will quit and it won't stick.  The key here is to do a cardiovascular activity that you enjoy!! Do you like to walk? Do it!  Do you like to hike and be outdoors? Do it!  Do you enjoy running on a treadmill?  Do it!! Do you enjoy swimming? Do it!   Do whatever you enjoy and you will end up sticking with it.  I personally love to run on a treadmill I have in my house.  I do not like to run or walk outside however.  Therefore, since I know this, I only run on my treadmill, and I have been doing it my whole life.

Now you may be thinking to yourself, how is 15 minutes going to do anything.  Well, 15 minutes will do something, and it is way, way better than nothing.  Just 15 minutes will get your heart beat up, will get you to sweat, and you improve your mood.  Further, many of you will find that you can go a little longer than 15 minutes.  I know that many days I get on my treadmill and I say, "All I am doing is 15 minutes!".  I may not be in the mood to exercise, or I may feel too busy for it.  But you know what, by the time I get to 15 minutes, I am feeling so good and my mood has improved and I want to do a little more.  So, the take away here is:  Shoot for 15 minutes, but if you are enjoying yourself, by all means do more!

3.  Get enough sleep.

I cannot tell you how neglected this third point is!! Do you know why getting enough sleep is so important to a weight loss diet?  Because lack of sleep has been proven to cause overeating.  I am personally proof of this!! I operate sleep deprived a lot of the time, and on the days where I have only a few hours, I overeat so much.  Not only that, but when I am short on sleep, my taste buds actually change.  If I have had only a few hours, I automatically reach for sweet foods like cookies and candy.  But when I have had a full eight hours, I always prefer saltier food to sweets.   If you have a problem with over eating and portion control, you may want to start keeping a sleep journal to analyze whether you are sleep deprived or not.

4.  Obey your cravings.

Yes, you read that right!  Look, nobody can stick to healthy eating 100% of the time.  It's just not a realistic goal.  And you know what, sometimes it actually benefits you to be in-tune with what your body is craving.  God designed the human body to be really smart, and I have personally experienced craving things that I was actually low in.

For example, during my pregnancies I craved foods high in Iron, and I found out later on after some blood tests that I was actually borderline anemic - see my post A Vegetarian, Organic Iron Supplement That is Non Constipating if you are having the same problem.  The point here is that your body knows what you need!  If you continually deny your body the things it is craving, you are setting yourself up for weight loss failure.   If you are really craving chocolate on Friday night, go ahead and have some.  Then Saturday morning you can continue trying to eat healthy after satisfying yourself with the chocolate your were craving on Friday.  If you continually restrict yourself from your favorite foods, you will likely end up foregoing your weight loss goals all together because you will be miserable.  Cheat days are actually a really good thing that will help you stay focused on your weight loss New Year's resolutions.
