Hi everyone!  My name is Petra, and I am severely allergic to certain types of wax commonly used in cosmetic products.  This effects which cosmetic brands and products I am able to use.  If your skin gets red, itchy, or swollen after using certain makeup products, it is very likely that you may have a wax allergy.

When I first identified my wax allergy, I knew of no lip products I could wear and I was forced to go without lipstick for about a year.  It was really upsetting and this is why I have created a list of lipsticks, lip pencils, and lip balms that those that suffer from wax allergies can wear.  These products either contain no wax whatsoever, or they contain the wax that I am not allergic to.   If you have a wax allergy and are having a hard time finding good lipstick and lip balm products, this list is for you!  This is a also great post to read for anyone that loves makeup because, even if you don't currently have a wax allergy, you could develop an allergy in the future from overusing your favorite products.

Wax in itself is not bad and it is heavily used in cosmetics because it helps the cosmetics bind and stick to the surface they are on.  Wax essentially gives a cosmetic product its staying power and prevents it from washing off.

Unfortunately for me, I have a severe allergy to certain commonly used waxes found in cosmetics.  I believe this allergy was brought on by over use of certain products I loved, and also by not removing my makeup when I went to sleep.  See my posts, Makeup Causes Wrinkles in 3 Ways, and 7 Signs You Are A Makeup Lawbreaker to learn more about the dangers of not removing your makeup.  I am really sad that I gave myself an allergy to these types of waxes because it has prevented me from continuing to use some of my most loved products.

The specific waxes that I know I am allergic to are: Beeswax, Microcrystalline wax, Candelilla wax, and an ingredient listed as "synthetic wax".

When I use products that contain these waxes on my lips, my lips become extremely itchy, red, and will swell up as if I had bad lip injections.  When I use eye liners, mascara, or eyeshadows that contain these waxes, my eyes will become extremely itchy, swollen, and red.

So far the skin on my face does not seem to be affected by these waxes.  Meaning, if those types of waxes are in foundation or concealer, I will not have an allergy.  It seems like only the skin on my mucous membranes - eyes and lips- is sensitive.  I refrain from using foundation and concealer with wax because doing so would get the wax on my brushes and beauty blender, all of which touch my eyes and lips.  Luckily, I have rarely ever seen foundation or concealer that contains wax.

Eyebrow pencils also contain wax.  Almost all eyebrow pencils, pomades, and gels, contain wax.  Unfortunately, this is somewhat unavoidable because the wax is what helps the product stay on your brows and look structured and thick.  I currently use this product in Medium Brown and this product in Medium Brown.  These two products do contain wax that I am allergic too, and for this reason I am extremely careful when I remove my makeup not to get my eyebrow makeup into my eyes.  I use these two products because I think they are one of the best brow products out there.  I have not yet found a wax-free brow product anywhere.

Fortunately for all makeup-lovers with wax allergies, there are certain waxes that we are not allergic to.  Ozokerite is a commonly used wax in cosmetics and thankfully my skin is completely fine with this one. I am also not allergic to ceresin wax and rice starch wax, two other wax products commonly used in cosmetic items such as lip liners and liquid lipstick.  I am also not allergic to lanolin.

Please check back to this list regularly as I update it frequently whenever I find new products that don't contain the above mentioned allergic waxes.

If you read The Makeup Equation, you know I am a mega huge ColourPop Cosmetics lover - You can get $5 off your first order with my personal link: $5 OFF!   I own more makeup products from this company than any other company out there!  I have probably spent over $2K in purchases from this company, which means I own a lot of products, because their products are very low in cost!  If you would like to know why I am such a huge fan of this awesome company, please see my post, 6 Must Have ColourPop Eyeshadows, where I list the three main reasons I love them.

One of the three reasons I love this company is because the majority of their products do no contain wax that I am allergic too.  The majority of their ultra matte lippies, contains no wax.  Some of their ultra matte lip products do contain wax that that I am allergic too, but most don't.

Here is a quick list of some of the Ultra Matte Lips that don't contain wax:  Dopey, Trap, Midi, Creeper, Marshmallow, Mars, Wednesday, Speed Dial, Chi, Kapow, Dr. M, A Boo (lip gloss), LAX, Guess, Donut, Lumiere, Vice (discont.) and Shimmy (discont.). In my post, Must Have Colourpop Ultra Matte Lips, I show you what a few of these Ultra Matte shades look like.

Their eyeshadows also do not contain wax and you can see my posts, ColourPop Glitter Eyeshadow Collection  and ColourPop Pressed Powder Review & ColourPop Lip Pencil Review to see what many of their eyeshadows looks like.

2.   NYX Professional Makeup Lip Lingerie

NYX Lip Lingerie lipstick in Cheekies, 16

The Lip Lingerie line by NYX Cosmetics is completely wax free and super high quality with great staying power! NYX lip lingerie is one of my new favorites that I think is just as good as ColourPop's Ultra Matte Lip.  The product is silky smooth, offers high color payoff, and stays on your lips all day.  Many of the shades offered in this line are dupes of many of ColourPop's Ultra Matte Lip allstars.  My two favorite are the shades 22, Silk Indulgent and 16, Cheekies,  as they are both almost exact dupes of Colourpop's "Vice", which ColourPop is no longer selling.  The 16, Cheekies shade is slightly lighter with more white than 22, Silk Indulgent.

Target carries the NYX Lip Lingerie line and frequently offers BOGO sales on them!!

In the picture above, I have 22, Silk Indulgent next to Colourpop Ultra Matte Vice. I am wearing 22, Silk Indulgent below as well.

3. Smashbox Be Legendary Liquid Metal

Smashbox Liquid Metal in Muave Squad

The pictures above are, from top to bottom, Muave Squad, Petal Metal, & Crimson Chrome.

This Smashbox Be Legendary Liquid Metal is a BRAND NEW product from Smashbox and one of my new absolute faves!! All the liquid metal color shades are absolutely beautiful!!! Even better news is that Amazon is currently selling them cheaper than Ulta and Sephora are right now!!

My personal three most used are: Mauve Squad - a dusty metallic muave; Petal - a nude metallic that looks amazing over 22, Silk Indulgent and 16, Cheekies; and Crimson Chrome - a thrilling bright metallic true red, also perfect for Christmas or Valentine's looks.

4.  Lipland Liquid Lipstick

Lipland Cosmetics is a new and innovative cosmetics company that offers high quality makeup for affordable prices.  Even better, if you are allergic to wax like me, their new True Matte and Cream to Matte liquid lipsticks are completely wax free!

They do not list their ingredients on their site, but if you email them, they will give you a full list of ingredients for any shade you request.  I did this myself and was delighted to discover that all their new shades are wax free.  A few of their older colors, such as NOVA, contain wax, but their new shades including the extremely popular Tribeca, No Filter, and all the Amrezy collection shades such as Rezy, Baked, and Retrograde, contain no wax.  You can buy Lipland liquid lipsticks directly from their website or from Forever21.

Tribeca is a true nude shade with no pink undertones.  I am wearing Tribeca below.

5.   Pinky Rose Cosmetics

This is another amazing company that makes absolutely gorgeous liquid lipstick colors.  Not all of their liquid lipsticks and glosses are wax free, but many are.  You just have to check the ingredients for each product, which they list below every item.  I currently own Luna, which is wax free, and is a gorgeous white-out, pinky nude.

I also own VIP, which also has no wax, and is also on sale right now, and is very similar to ColourPop's Dopey, but with a little more white-grey in it.  I like to mix VIP with Colourpop's Marshmallow  to get a gorgeous cool-toned plum.  I am wearing this combination below:

Can you tell I love nudes?  This Lip Last lipstick line contains only Ozokerite wax.  I have been using their color in "01 Oh My Beige" for years and years.  I use it as the final coat over my liquid lipstick and liner.  They have lots of other gorgeous colors in this Lip Last brand, feel fee to check them out here: Lip Last Lipstick

7. Colourpop Lippie Stix

ColourPop Lippie Stix

 ColourPop Lippie Stix bound

ColourPop also has a line of creamy lipstick called Lippie Stix.  Be aware that their lippie stix are very creamy, and can wipe off somewhat easily, but if you looking to put a creamy lipstick coat over a dry liquid lipstick, they are perfect.  I use their lippie stix as a top coat over my dryer liquid lipsticks.  Some of their Lippie Stix, such as Colourpop Lippie Stix Oh Snap, have synthetic wax in them, which I am allergic too, however others, such as Birdy and Colourpop Lippie Stix Trixie, contain no wax whatsoever.  Just check the ingredient list for any that you are interested in.

Birdy is a very close dupe of Lip Last Oh My Beige! that I mentioned above, it is just a little creamier and more fluid.  Birdy is about $10 cheaper.  In this pictures above, the top one is Birdy , and the bottom one of the lips is Colourpop Lippie Stix Bound.

In the pictures below, I have Colourpop Shimmy, topped with  ColourPop Lippie Stix in Birdy:

Let's now move onto the lip balms.  It can be very frustrating trying to find a lip balm when you are allergic to beeswax because literally almost every lip balm company puts beeswax into their lip balm.  Fortunately, I have found some really amazing lip balms that contain no allergic waxes!!  Please keep reading to find out what they are:

8.   Fruit Pigmented Lip Butter from 100% Pure Cosmetics

I love the 100% Pure Cosmetics company because they are vegan and their ingredient list for their products is fantastic.  They have a #NoDirtyBeauty movement that rocks!  This is a company that really does care about your health and what they are putting in their products, and their ingredient list reflects this.  The 100% Pure Cosmetics lists ingredients for all of their products, which I absolutely love!  It makes it so much easier for the consumer when ingredients are listed below the product.

Their Fruit Pigmented Lip Butter comes in four amazing flavors:  Cranberry, Peach, Pomegranate, and Strawberry.  The ingredient list for these lip butters is truly breathtaking, one of the best I have ever seen, check it out below:

And for all my blogger mamas out there, 100% Pure Cosmetics is also an excellent company to be an affiliate of! 9.  Coconut Lip Love

This coconut oil and shea butter based lip serum is one of my absolute favorite lip balm products!  Coconut Lip Love is by Kopari Beauty, an organic coconut oil based beauty company whose products are free of sulfates, parabens, and silicones.  They are also cruelty free.  Right now just for Black Friday, they are offering FREE SHIPPING on every order in addition to up to $30 off your purchase.  You also automatically get 10% OFF your purchase when you sign up for their text alerts!

10.  Colourpop Crystal Balm

 ColourPop Crystal Balm Rose Quartz

ColourPop Cystal Balm Aquamarine

The pictures above are Rose Quart and Aquamarine.  They also have Aventurine and Amethyst.

This Colourpop Crystal Balm is a BRAND NEW product just released from ColourPop Cosmetics.  These amazing crystal lip balms contain diamond powder, crystal powder, and coconut oil - wow!  They are extremely hydrating on your lips and look amazing both on bare lips and on top of lipstick.  I just cannot say enough good things about this product.   I don't know how long ColourPop will have these in stock.  Currently Amazon's price on this Colourpop Crystal Balm is more expensive than Colourpop's, but Amazon carries Rose Quartz, which is sold out on ColourPop's site, and the others will probably sell out soon also, so it really depends on which shade you are looking to get and when you buy it. You can get $5 off your first order from ColourPop with my personal link: $5 OFF!

 11.  Moisturizing Lip Care Stick

 Wax Free Lip Balm

This is a great lip balm and works great for dry or chapped lips and it is currently 40% off right now!!  I use this product a LOT in the winter.  The only wax that the Hydrating Lip Care Balm contains is Ozokerite, which I already mentioned doesn't gives me allergies.  Here is their ingredient list for this product:

ingredients in the body shop's hydrating lip care product

As you can see from my list, you are still able to wear many high quality lip products from well known brands even if you are allergic to wax.  Even if you don't have a wax allergy right now, you could develop one at any time the same way I did, from overusing beloved products.  This is why this is a good list to keep in your back pocket just in case that ever happens.

And if you found this post helpful, can I ask you one favor?  Would you please share it and help others with wax allergies who are struggling to find nice lip products ? Thanks so much!!
